ADHD Addiction Recovery Coaching Online

Receiving support to achieve and maintain recovery from addiction is crucial. Our recovery coaching programs are specifically designed to help individuals stay focused on sobriety and steer clear of behaviour that can lead to relapse. Our highly-trained and experienced recovery coach provides professional support to empower individuals to set and reach their goals. Many individuals often seek information on accessing support after completing residential addiction treatment, and a sober coach can provide valuable assistance in this transition.

The primary objective of a Addiction & Recovery Coach is to motivate and inspire individuals to take positive steps and embrace a clean and sober lifestyle. It's a well-known fact that many people experience relapses shortly after completing treatment, often due to a lack of guidance and support. Without motivation and encouragement, staying clean and sober can become unappealing. This is where we can step in and provide help!

What is ADHD Addiction Recovery Coaching?

Frequently referred to as a sober coach or sober companion, a certified recovery coach is equipped with the necessary training and experience to guide and motivate individuals in the early stages of recovery. Many of our clients have found that working with a recovery coach in the initial months after leaving rehabilitation has equipped them with the tools to avoid relapse.

The process of recovery involves more than just reverting back to a former condition; it also entails moving forward and building a brighter tomorrow.

Rehabilitation vs. Recovery: Understanding the Difference

When it comes to facing and moving past obstacles in life, two key ideas often play a role: rehabilitation and recovery. While they may appear similar, they carry distinct meanings and implications. Let's explore these terms further to gain a deeper insight.  What is Rehabilitation? Rehabilitation involves the process of restoring an individual to their previous level of functioning or helping them acquire new skills following an illness, injury, or disability.  It takes a comprehensive approach that addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects of a person's life. The goal of rehabilitation is to enhance independence, improve quality of life, and promote overall well-being.  Rehabilitation focuses on regaining lost abilities and developing strategies to adapt to new circumstances, such as recovering from a physical injury, managing a chronic condition, or coping with a mental health issue. This may include medical treatments, therapy sessions, assistive devices, and lifestyle modifications tailored to individual needs.  The Essence of Recovery Recovery is a broader concept that extends beyond simply regaining physical or cognitive abilities. It is a personal journey of transformation and growth, involving a holistic approach to healing.  Recovery applies not only to individuals facing health challenges but also to those overcoming addiction, trauma, or any significant setback in life.  Recovery is a deeply personal experience that varies from person to person. It involves rebuilding one's life, finding meaning and purpose, and embracing a new sense of self. This process includes overcoming obstacles, developing resilience, and fostering a positive mindset.

Getting to Know ADHD and Addiction

ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a brain condition that usually shows up in kids but can stick around into adulthood. It's often linked to having a hard time focusing, sitting still, dealing with boredom, and controlling sudden urges. ADHD and addiction can go hand in hand.

People with ADHD often move around a lot and struggle to stay focused or control their impulses. ADHD addiction recovery coaching can help maintain focus and reduce impulsivity.

Those with ADHD might be more likely to use drugs or alcohol to deal with the symptoms they're facing. Some might even be given stimulants to help with ADHD but end up addicted. Either way, it can lead to a tough cycle of addiction that's hard to spot or fix without help from a professional such as an addiction coach who specialises in the field.

About 25% of adults seeking help for addiction to alcohol or drugs also have ADHD.

There are different programs out there that tackle both ADHD and addiction at the same time. These programs for people with ADHD focus on treating both conditions at once, using various therapies to help them heal and develop good habits.

How ADHD and Addiction Start

There are a few things that can increase someone's chances of getting ADHD or developing an addiction, including:

Genetics

The most common reason for ADHD is genetics. Kids with ADHD are four times more likely to have a family member with the same condition. Genes also play a part in how addiction develops.

Being Exposed to Harmful Stuff

Studies have shown that if a mum smokes or drinks alcohol while pregnant, her child might get ADHD. Also, being around lead can make someone hyperactive; being exposed to drugs or alcohol while in the womb could lead to addiction in the baby right after birth.

Trauma

Injuries to the brain, brain tumours, strokes, or diseases can cause problems with paying attention and controlling movements and urges. This is rare as a cause of ADHD; having trouble controlling impulses might also lead to addiction.

ADHD and Addiction

ADHD can mess with how well someone does in school or at work and can make it hard to make friends. Many people with ADHD turn to drugs or alcohol to deal with these issues. Studies have found that about 21% of guys and men with ADHD and 13% of women and girls with ADHD use drugs or alcohol. People with ADHD might use drugs or alcohol to try to make up for not having enough dopamine in their brains, since they have lower levels of it compared to people without ADHD.

Treating ADHD and addiction can be tricky because the drugs used to treat ADHD can also be addictive. Medications like Ritalin and Adderall are often used to help manage ADHD symptoms but can also be misused. During treatment, it's really important to keep an eye on both conditions at the same time.

sustain their recovery from addiction. Originally developed in the USA, recovery coaching has now become an integral part of many treatment programs here in the UK. While some rehabilitation centres may offer access to a coach, most only provide weekly group aftercare sessions. A sober coach offers a much more personalised and intensive level of support that has proven to be invaluable in addiction recovery.

Addiction In The UK

The United Kingdom faces a significant challenge with drug and alcohol addiction, leading Europe in this issue. This problem encompasses both legal substances and the use of highly dangerous Class A drugs such as heroin, cocaine, meth, and hallucinogens. The nation spends a staggering £36 billion annually on treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, yet the success rates for maintaining sobriety are alarmingly low. Addiction not only impacts the individuals struggling with it, but also tears apart families and communities.  Achieving sobriety is a transformative journey that requires support and guidance. While 12 Step Fellowships offer valuable support, some individuals may need additional assistance beyond meetings and sponsorship, leading them to seek professional treatment.  In treatment, individuals undergo an intensive process of healing and recovery from their pain and addiction. Upon completion, some may choose to work with a recovery coach to prevent relapse. A skilled Recovery Coach serves as a role model, sharing their own experiences openly and honestly. There is no judgement, only a sense of connection and safety through shared experiences. The coach provides practical tools for navigating each day, one moment at a time, during the vulnerable early stages of recovery. By meeting clients where they are emotionally and physically, the coach establishes a personal connection and instils hope for a successful recovery journey.
